@m7/mcp-server
An MCP server that makes an AI coding agent work through a fixed seven-phase cycle (discovery, architecture, solution, impact, simulation, implementation, report) with reflection gates. It also provides persistent tiered project memory, a 'fog of war' knowledge tracker, and a 'Hive' that queries several OpenAI/Anthropic models and merges the answers.
Why it's held
Tries to override the agent's instructions.
What it can touch
| files | write, including saved tokens (.npmrc, .netrc, git credentials), .env, ~/.cursor/mcp.json, ~/.cursor/projects, <project>/.cursor/rules/m7-memory.mdc |
|---|---|
| network | api.anthropic.com, api.openai.com, dev.myapp.com, developer.mozilla.org, docs.docker.com, docs.m7.dev, github.com, livebench.ai, myapp.com, nodejs.org, reactjs.org, registry.npmjs.org, staging.myapp.com, www.vellum.ai |
| shell | runs commands |
| secrets | ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, API_KEY, DB_PASSWORD, JWT_SECRET, M7_MESH_SECRET, M7_RELAY_SECRET, NPM_TOKEN, OPENAI_API_KEY, REACT_APP_API_KEY |
What it actually does
The server runs over stdio and registers about 37 tools. At startup it requires OPENAI_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and passes them to an APIManager used by Hive, so Hive sends prompts and project context to OpenAI and Anthropic. It keeps all state in the project directory (.m7/, m7-cycles/, CYCLE_REGISTRY.md). mcp_m7_init_project creates a memory bank and writes several files into the project: README.md, INDEX.md, MASTER_REFERENCE.md, CODING_STANDARDS.md, .cursorrules, .gitignore, and an always-apply Cursor rule at .cursor/rules/m7-memory.mdc. With force:true these files overwrite existing ones. Memory can optionally use ChromaDB at localhost:8000. Telemetry uploads only if M7_TELEMETRY_ENDPOINT is set. install.sh runs npm install and the build, writes the API keys into .env, can start ChromaDB with docker-compose, and replaces ~/.cursor/mcp.json with a file containing only the m7 server and the API keys in plain text (after making a backup). The reviewed code shows no exfiltration, hidden instructions, obfuscation or persistence. The 'injection' and 'dynamic code' strings are detection patterns and test fixtures. Several modules were not in the bundle and were not reviewed, including mesh relay, devops, telemetry upload and the 'Codex Martianus' repentance/litany tools.

mediuminstall.sh replaces the whole Cursor MCP config and writes API keys into it in plain text
When the user agrees to configure Cursor, install.sh overwrites ~/.cursor/mcp.json with a file that contains only the m7 server. Any other MCP servers the user had configured are dropped. A timestamped backup is made, but the user has to merge it back by hand. The OpenAI and Anthropic keys are also embedded in plain text in that global config file.

mediuminit_project can overwrite existing README.md, .cursorrules and INDEX.md
The init tool refuses to run on a non-empty directory unless force is true. With force:true it writes README.md, .cursorrules, INDEX.md and other reference files without checking whether they exist, so existing project files are silently replaced. An agent could pass force:true on its own.

mediumWrites persistent always-applied agent rules into the user's project
init_project and the cold-start path create .cursorrules and a Cursor rule with alwaysApply: true. These stay in the project and keep steering the agent after the server is removed. The current content is benign: it tells the agent to read INDEX.md and similar files, follow the M7 cycle and update reference files. With force: true the tool also overwrites an existing README.md and INDEX.md. This is expected for a methodology tool, but users should know it modifies agent instructions and project files.

About this check
Checked November 3, 2026 at commit 0ace0ab8e74e, 443 files. Rules for known red flags, then two Claude reviews, one of them told to assume the author is malicious. A later commit hasn't been checked. How checks work.
